Fruit trees in every courtyard, a school bag for every child

Who we are

Rooted in Bareilly, working for rural India

Khushhali Foundation was started in February 2006 by Shri Sameer Mohan near Khai Kheda village in Bareilly, and registered as a public trust in 2011.

Our founder, Shri Sameer Mohan, began by living in a hut on the farm near Khai Kheda, practising organic farming and training farmers from the nearby villages. From that beginning grew three programmes: Gramya for integrated rural development, Aranya for environmental awareness and conservation, and Indradhanush for the education of underprivileged children. Today farmers, labourers and animal rearers work alongside writers, professors, doctors, chartered accountants, engineers, businesspeople, students and homemakers. Our work has been recognised by the weekly Panchjanya and by the Sant Ishwar Foundation. We are not a religious or political organisation and have no political affiliation.

How we work

From village survey to fruiting tree

Every Vriksh Mitra–Gram Mitra campaign follows the same plan, from the first village survey to the first harvest.

  1. 01

    Select the area and survey

We choose the district for the year, then our surveyors visit its villages to understand families' needs and the space they have for trees.

  2. 02

    Choose the right trees

Fruit trees are picked for the local climate and soil, and for the longevity to last for generations.

  3. 03

    Awareness meetings

Village meetings explain the nutritional, economic and environmental value of trees. A gram samiti of four or five volunteers is formed in every village.

  4. 04

    Register farmers

Farmers who want trees and have space for them are registered and receive an invitation card. The number of saplings per family depends on the courtyard space available.

  5. 05

    Distribution camp

Timed with the monsoon, each camp hosts 725 to 775 farmers. A packet of five to ten saplings waits at every seat, guests explain how to care for the trees, and every farmer takes an oath to protect them.

  6. 06

    Post-plantation survey

After planting, our full-time staff visit the villages and geo-tag at least half of the plants.

  7. 07

    Second survey

Three months later we survey again and record the survival rate. About 70% of the trees make it.

  8. 08

    Feedback at harvest

We return to hear from families once their trees begin to bear fruit, while the gram samiti keeps encouraging them to protect the plants.
